As I Lay Dying Take What's Left Lyrics

If I Killed Someone for You

[Verse 1]

I'm sorry that I did this

The blood is on my hands

I stare at my reflection

I don't know who I am

Practice my confession

In case I take the stand

I'll say I learned my lesson

I'll be a better man

I'm packing up my things and

I'm wiping down the walls

I'm rinsing off my clothes and

I'm walking through the halls

I did it all for her

So I felt nothing at all

I don't know what she'll say

So I'll ask her when she calls

[Chorus]

Would you love me more (Would you love me more)

If I killed someone for you?

Would you hold my hand (Would you hold my hand)

They're the same ones that I used

When I killed someone for you

Would you turn me in (Would you turn me in)

When they say I'm on the loose?

Would you hide me when (Would you hide me when)

My face is on the news?

'Cause I killed someone for you

[Verse 2]

I hear the sirens coming

I see the flashing lights

I'm driving through the suburbs

Wearing my disguise

I show up at her doorstep

To look her in the eyes

I tell her that it's me

But she doesn't recognize

Can't you see I'm running?

Said I need a place to hide

I've gotta ask you something

Could you please let me inside?

Just let me explain

No I wouldn't tell you lies

I know you'll understand

If you let me stay the night

[Bridge]

You have to understand that

The one I killed is me

Changing what I was

For what you wanted me to be

I followed your direction

Did everything you asked

I hope it makes you happy

'Cause there's just no turning back

  • Practice my confession In case I take the stand ...:

I suppose this is the part of the song where it's just like, I guess I don't know how far the metaphor really reaches here. But here, it's just setting the scene for, if you get caught. Maybe here, it's kind of like your friends being like; Why did you change the person that you were? Maybe in that, this part of the song is more like if you get caught, and you actually go to jail. Maybe the jury is your friends being like, "Yo, you used to be cool, and you used to play video games and hang out with us. And now, you don't anymore." I remember that being a thing. I used to go to my friend's house all the time and play Grand Theft Auto every day. And then, I was in a relationship, and I was like, "Nah, she's not down for that. I gotta hang out with her. So, I'm not hanging out with you anymore!" And, your friends are like; "Yo, what are you doing? That's not cool!" So, I think that's maybe your friends and family a little bit, the jury there.

  • Would you love me more (Would you love me more) If...:

Maybe they don't necessarily know that you've changed the person that you are. But, you're showing them; Look, this is what I've done for you. Do you like me now? Is this better for you? It's kind of just like, you're doing a service to somebody else. So, the worse part is, sometimes you change yourself, and they don't end up liking you anyways. And then, you know, you've lost who you are, and you have to pick up the pieces and figure out who you are again, and all of your efforts were in vain. So, the question is just like; Look, I did this now. Do you like me better? Was this worth it? Tell me. That's what it is.

    -Alec Benjamin

  • Would you hold my hand (Would you hold my hand) ...:

I think sometimes, if you were to explain to the other person exactly what you were doing, maybe they would think; Well, that's a terrible thing to do. You shouldn't do that, on one hand. But, maybe, they'd like you a little bit more if you were different. And so, you know, sometimes people say something, and they do something else. And so, it's like; Yo, if you really think it's a bad thing, will you like me better now that I've changed the person that am? Can you still love me? These are the hands that I used to do that. If that makes sense. I don't know. I'm not as … sometimes I can't articulate as well as I'd like to. But, that's what it means.

    -Alec Benjamin

  • Would you turn me in (Would you turn me in) When ...:

I think this part of the song is more metaphorical, because I didn't actually kill somebody, it's just not gonna be hiding me or whatever. But I think it was in service of the story, so it made sense to put it in the song.

    -Alec Benjamin

  • I hear the sirens coming I see the flashing lights...:

I suppose the disguise is now the new person that you are, the person that you become after you change yourself. I don't know, this isn't really what it was, when I was writing it, what I was thinking about, but maybe could be you're kind of just hiding from your friends and family as you go to show this person that you care about, the new person that you've become. But for me, it was just all about, "How do I tell the story?" You have to take some poetic license sometimes, so I'm not actually, this didn't happen. But it helps me outline the story.

    -Alec Benjamin

  • I show up at her doorstep To look her in the eyes ...:

After you've kind of changed the person that you are, and you go back to this person that you want to care about you and you're like, "Okay look, like hey, it's me. Do you recognize me?" There's that kind of scary moment where maybe you've changed too much or you've gone too far, or they don't like the new person that you are. You're kind of trying to convince them, "Yo, this is me, let me explain to you what I've done." So, that's what that moment is. Obviously, it goes back into the chorus. It kind of takes it, in the first verse when you're singing the chorus, its you just killed somebody, now you're like, "Okay well this is the question I'm gonna ask her." Then the second verse is like. "Okay, I'm driving to her house." Now you're at her doorstep. Now the second chorus becomes not like a thing that you wanna ask somebody, but now you're actually asking it to her. "This is what I did, do you care about me more now?" But you don't have your answer yet.

    -Alec Benjamin

  • You have to understand that The one I killed is me...:

Initially, I thought it was a good thing, and it's not just in a romantic relationship, I've done it with friends, acquaintances, it's in a lot of different scenarios just to fit into a group, or to sit at a different lunch table, or get into a club, or go to a certain school. Whatever. There's a saying that my mom used to say to me, "Wherever I go, there I am." You always end up becoming, you always revert back to the person that you really are. I think, ultimately, I don't know if that's 100 percent true though, because I do feel like in certain cases I lost a little bit of who I am. Maybe it always comes back, that kind of freaks me out. I do think that you have to, in order to be in any kind of relationship, you have to be with somebody who accepts you for the person that you are. For your eccentricities, and even if there are things about you that are not their favorite part about you, they have to accept them. Because nobody is perfect, and everybody has flaws, and you shouldn't have to hide those. Its really difficult as it is to live with those things. Imagine the closest people in your life not, you wouldn't want to have to hide that from the people that you care about the most, you want to be the most vulnerable with them.

    -Alec Benjamin

  • I hope it makes you happy 'Cause there's...:

That is something that I really haven't decided yet, I'm not really sure if you can turn back. I don't know. I think you can turn back, because, I think it just takes a lot of time. But ultimately, initially, when this happened to me, my friends would be like, "Yo, we used to do this together." And I'd go home later at night and I'm like, "Maybe they're right, can I even be that person again?"

    -Alec Benjamin

  • I'm packing up my things and I'm wiping ...:

Well, I think that, obviously, I didn't really kill somebody, so I wasn't wiping blood off the walls and stuff like that. But, I do think that, when you've realized that what you've done is wrong, and you have to change yourself, you have to pick up the pieces, and maybe that's what that metaphor is about. I don't know. There's definitely a lot of things that I did change about myself physically. Because, I would wear some weird clothes and stuff. And, I would wear high socks and things like that. You know, I was in a relationship. I haven't been in that many relationships. But, sometimes, my eccentricities are maybe a little bit uncomfortable for the person that I'm with. And so, I'm like; Well, maybe I won't do that. I used to make up words and stuff, which actually, I never really admitted that.
